Global Warming Effects
The planet is warming, from North Pole to South Pole. Since 1906, the global average surface temperature has increased by more than 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius)- even more in sensitive polar regions. And the impacts of rising temperatures aren't waiting for some far-flung future-the effects of global warming are appearing right now.
How Global Warming Works
Despite a scientific consensus on the subject, some people don't think global warming is happening at all. There are several reasons for this: They don't think the data show a measurable upward trend in global temperatures, either because we don't have enough long-term historical climate data or because the data we do have isn't clear enough.
Your Food Choices Can Have a Big Climate Impact, So Be Picky, New Study Says
When it comes to the climate impacts of our diet, it pays to be particular. One bowl of rice can have six times the climate impact of another. Beer from a bottle can result in more greenhouse gas emissions than beer from a keg.
Your Questions About Food and Climate Change, Answered
Yes. The world's food system is responsible for about one-quarter of the planet-warming greenhouse gases that humans generate each year. That includes raising and harvesting all the plants, animals and animal products we eat - beef, chicken, fish, milk, lentils, kale, corn and more - as well as processing, packaging and shipping food to markets all over the world.
